At some turn in our lives, we face a legal situation and are
in the need of the expertise and advice of an efficient
attorney. People are often faced with the crisis of finding
a good attorney and the assistance they should ideally
expect from one. If you are a member of this club, here are
some tips to keep in mind while scouting for a lawyer.
Let's consider a hypothetical situation of divorce. It is
important to have an excellent attorney in this case because
your money, property and custodian rights for your children
are at stake. You need a lawyer whom you can trust and who
will guide you through this painful and harrowing experience
in your life. A comfort level should be present between you
and your attorney as you may require his help in the future
as well.
Ask your friends who have gone recently through a divorce
process. They will be able to recommend you one you can
trust. If they have had a good experience, may be you will
like to have an interview with that attorney. If you have
worked with other attorneys in other legal cases, ask
them for a recommendation. Frequently, attorneys know
other attorneys even though they are specialized in
another legal area.
No matter who has recommend the attorney your are thinking
of, always verify his or her IDs and credentials. Also
check his qualifications very carefully. Remember you are
not looking for the cheapest attorney you could find but
you want to find the better one for your situation. He has
to be the better one to represent your interests.
Another point to bear in mind in case of divorce is that you
and your ex-spouse should not have the same attorney. This
can cause clash of interests and neither will be properly
represented. Sometimes one of the parties may not even hire
a lawyer but represent themselves. Whatever be the case,
your lawyer should represent your case and cannot guide your
spouse on legal matters in a divorce proceeding.
Even though if your budget is limited and you don't have
too much money for hiring an attorney, you will always
find a good one who is available. The first place where
you can find one if you cannot come up with the money for
the costs of having a private lawyer, is the Public Office
of your town or city and the local lawyers association or
similar offices.
Finally, choosing your attorney should be a considered
decision. Therefore be calm and don't take any hasty
decisions. Most importantly, do not take any decision until
you are absolutely sure.
